Quick answer

To convert MB to GB, divide the megabytes by 1,024. So 4,096 MB is exactly 4 GB. Phone carriers and storage makers divide by 1,000 instead, which turns the same 4,096 MB into 4.096 GB. Both are correct, they simply use different systems, and this MB to GB converter gives you either one.

The short answer

Is MB greater than GB?

No. GB is the larger unit. One gigabyte holds 1,024 megabytes, so a 900 MB download is still under a single gigabyte. The order runs byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, with each step roughly a thousand times bigger than the one before it. A quick megabyte to gigabyte conversion is usually all you need to see whether a file fits inside a plan or a drive.

GB = MB ÷ 1024 Binary, used by Windows and macOS. For decimal, divide by 1,000 instead.

Why two different answers exist

Computers count in binary, so an operating system treats one gigabyte as 1,024 megabytes. Storage makers, mobile networks and most upload forms use the decimal meaning of giga, which is 1,000. The strict binary units have their own names, the mebibyte and gibibyte, defined by the IEC binary prefixes. That is what a MiB label means when you meet one, and converting mib to gb uses the same divide by 1,024 rule shown above.

In practice

When you actually need this

The usual reason is a plan or a limit. A carrier sells 20 GB a month but reports usage in MB, a game download is quoted at 4,096 MB while your free space reads in GB, or a cloud backup caps a single file. Converting first tells you whether it fits. If it does not, our image compressor and PDF compressor both shrink files without an upload.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MB greater than GB?
No. GB is the bigger unit. One gigabyte holds 1,024 megabytes in binary, or 1,000 in decimal, so it takes about a thousand megabytes to make one gigabyte.
How many MB are in 1 GB?
1,024 MB in the binary system that Windows and macOS use, and 1,000 MB in the decimal system used by storage makers and mobile carriers.
How much is 4096 MB in GB?
Exactly 4 GB in binary, because 4,096 divided by 1,024 gives 4. In decimal it comes to 4.096 GB.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
A mebibyte is exactly 1,048,576 bytes, while a megabyte is often used loosely for either that number or a flat one million. Converting MiB to GB uses the same divide by 1,024 rule.
How many MBs in a gig?
A gig is everyday shorthand for a gigabyte, so the answer is 1,024 MB in binary or 1,000 MB in decimal.
Is this MB to GB converter free?
Yes, completely free with no sign up. There is no limit on how many conversions you can run.
