Quick answer
There are 60 minutes in an hour, so to convert hours to minutes you multiply by 60. Decimal hours work too, so 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. Type your figure above and the answer appears immediately, with seconds, days and weeks also in the dropdowns.

minutes = hours × 60Sixty comes from Babylonian base 60 arithmetic, which is why time is not decimal.
hours to minutes on a timesheet
Timesheets and invoices are the usual reason for this one. Payroll systems record decimal hours while people think in minutes, and the two get confused constantly. Converting hours to minutes is a multiplication by 60, so 7.25 hours is 435 minutes, or 7 hours 15 minutes. The trap is reading 7.25 as 7 hours 25 minutes, which overstates the figure by ten minutes on every entry.
minutes to seconds for timing and video
Converting minutes to seconds is another multiplication by 60. Video editing, cooking timers and athletics all work in seconds while people plan in minutes, so a 3 minute 40 second track is 220 seconds. Milliseconds are in the dropdowns too, which matters for anything measured programmatically, since a second is 1,000 ms.
Days, weeks and project planning
A days to hours conversion is a multiplication by 24, and a day is 1,440 minutes while a week is 10,080. These numbers come up when planning sprints or estimating uptime. Because these are exact multiples, the arithmetic never rounds. Note that the converter treats a day as exactly 24 hours, which ignores the one hour shift on daylight saving changeover days. For scheduling across those dates, use the time zone converter instead.
Sixty minutes rather than a hundred
Time resists decimalisation because it inherited base 60 from Babylonian astronomy, and 60 divides cleanly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30. That is why a third of an hour is a tidy 20 minutes while a third of 100 would not be. France tried decimal time in the 1790s and abandoned it within two years.
