The number to remember

Why kg to lbs is a multiplication by 2.20462

The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, agreed internationally in 1959. Invert that and you get 2.20462 pounds per kilogram. It is a definition rather than a measurement, so the factor never drifts. For a quick mental estimate, double the kilograms and add ten percent, which puts 70 kg at roughly 154 lbs. The exact figure is 154.32.

The other direction

lbs to kg for gym plates and luggage

Converting lbs to kg means dividing by 2.20462, or multiplying by 0.4536 if you prefer. This is the everyday direction for anyone reading American gym equipment or an airline allowance written in pounds. A 45 lb barbell plate is 20.41 kg, and a 50 lb baggage limit is 22.68 kg, which is why a 23 kg allowance is not quite the same thing.

Small weights

lbs to oz and oz to g in the kitchen

Recipes are where the small units bite. There are exactly 16 ounces in a pound, so lbs to oz is a simple multiplication. Going metric, one ounce is 28.3495 grams, so oz to g means multiplying by roughly 28.35. American recipes tend to use ounces by weight for dry goods and fluid ounces for liquids, and the two are not interchangeable, so check which one the recipe means before converting.

British measures

stone to lbs and body weight

The stone is still normal in Britain and Ireland for body weight and almost nowhere else. One stone is exactly 14 pounds, so stone to lbs is a multiplication by 14, and 11 stone 4 is 158 lbs or 71.67 kg. The converter above handles stones directly, so you do not have to work through pounds first.

FAQ

Weight questions

How do I convert kg to lbs in my head?+
Double the kilograms and add ten percent. For 80 kg that gives 160 plus 16, so about 176 lbs. The exact answer is 176.37.
Is a pound the same everywhere?+
The international avoirdupois pound is, and that is what this tool uses. Older troy pounds for precious metals are different and are not covered here.
How many ounces are in a pound?+
Exactly 16. That one is a definition, not a rounded figure.
Why does my recipe give ounces for liquid?+
Because fluid ounces measure volume, not weight, and they are a different unit entirely. For those, use the volume converter instead.
Why did my old page redirect here?+
The separate weight converters have been merged into this one, so every unit in the family is available from the dropdowns.
Does this work offline?+
Once the page has loaded, yes. The arithmetic runs in your browser rather than on a server.
