Check which one before you convert liters to gallons
This is the trap. A US gallon is 3.78541 litres and a UK imperial gallon is 4.54609, about twenty percent larger. Convert liters to gallons with the wrong one and a car fuel figure or a recipe quantity will be badly out. This tool uses US gallons, which is what almost every online recipe and American fuel figure means. If your source is British and predates metrication, do the sum with the imperial value instead.
ml to cups is the most useful pair here
A US cup is 236.588 millilitres, usually rounded to 240 in nutrition labelling. That rounding is why ml to cups conversions rarely land on tidy numbers and why 250 ml, the metric cup used in Australia, is not the same as an American one. Going the other way, a cups to ml conversion is a multiplication by 236.588. For most cooking the rounding is small enough to ignore, but for baking, where ratios matter, use the exact figure the converter gives you.
tbsp to tsp and the small quantities
There are exactly 3 teaspoons in a US tablespoon, so tbsp to tsp is a multiplication by three. One tablespoon is 14.787 ml and one teaspoon is 4.929 ml, which is why measuring spoons sold as 15 ml and 5 ml are near enough for cooking. Britain and Australia both use a 20 ml tablespoon, so an Australian recipe calling for a tablespoon means four teaspoons, not three.
gallons to liters for fuel and tanks
Converting gallons to liters means multiplying by 3.78541 for US gallons. It comes up most often with fuel economy, since a car rated at 30 miles per US gallon is doing 12.75 kilometres per litre. Tank capacities, paint tins and aquarium volumes are the other common cases, and all of them care about which gallon the original figure used.
