A .jfif file is just a JPEG
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the wrapper that ordinary JPEG data has travelled in since 1992, so a .jfif to png job is really a JPEG decode followed by a PNG encode. The confusion is entirely about the extension. Windows Photos, Preview and most editors handle .jpg fine, then stall on the identical file when it arrives named .jfif. Renaming the extension by hand sometimes works and sometimes corrupts the file, which is why a proper convert is safer.
Why you keep getting .jfif files
Three sources account for almost all of them. Older Outlook builds save inline images with the .jfif extension, several camera and scanner drivers write the same way, and a long standing Windows registry quirk makes some browsers save .jfif instead of .jpg. None of it is a broken file. It is a naming habit, and a jfif to png converter clears it in one pass.
